  • Beautiful horses of Circus Finlandia I filmed yesterday in the Kaisaniemi park. Perfect for a new makeshift video for the track "Kotobuki".

I'm surprised that people seem to like the mellow nature of this track. I think I had just the record on at EMS while I was doing simple improvised melodies with a Nord Wave synth. There's all some glitches from SuperCollider controlled Evolution Synthesis EVS-1 synth.

From the Chimæras album. The album is still available from @___mappa (cassette/digital)
  • Onwards with the Chimæras videos/teasers:::
glitching photogrammetry 3D models of our home for a track called Sargon. The track was made with some kind of SuperCollider sample manipulation with Ina GRM tools, can't remember the details:)

Maybe a bit intense so photosensitivity/epilepsy warning!

Chimæras also available for listening at my own Bandcamp (ffforces.bandcamp.com) + I also put Rheinmetall to my SoundCloud (soundcloud.com/forces-music).

The tapes/digital release available from @___mappa
  • I will continue my series of makeshift music videos for the Chimæras album.
This time, a track called Manticore made with Nord G2 modular and Buchla clone at EMS Stockholm (cool synths which would be completely inaccessible without the residency).
The video is from last January. A sunny winter day started to melt the ice formations of Uunisaari island making these fun under-ice water patterns 💧❄️🌞
Chimæras still available as a cassette or digital release from @___mappa Bandcamp.
  • decided that i could do some teaser videos for my 'chimæras' album released on @___mappa

just simple makeshift music videos with whatever garbage i have accumulated on my phone

first up, the first track 'perspecta'

so audio on 🔊 and enjoy, maybe?

full album available at mappa bandcamp (link in bio as people tend to say xd)
  • It’s here! My new Forces album Chimæras is released today on the excellent Slovakian label @___mappa – a home for fellow sonic cartographers. You can listen to it below on Bandcamp. (Helsinki/FIN people I can deal the cassette for the price of 9e in the following weeks)

(link in bio)

I recorded the album about one year and two months ago at @elektronmusikstudion_ems where I was having a longer six weeks residency. Back then, I wasn’t really sure what I was doing there. Every day I went to the studio, and was just doing these strange jams, mostly using the forgotten hardware rack synths of the 90s and SuperCollider audio & MIDI manipulations + a few Serge and Buchla modular jams as well.

When I came back home from the residency, I started cutting-pasting those different recordings together. I tried to form tracks which would have two-or-three very different tonalities, but having some kind of inherent - but weird - logic. The topic of a chimera came quickly to mind and I decided that the whole album should be comprised of sonic chimeras.

At that time I was also reading about one of the Black-something named companies (Blackstone?), which is a huge company doing plenty of different things, and also a weapon manufacturer. I started to think about how different mega-corporations can have these chimeric limbs – each limb operating in vastly different fields, some extra sinister and some more normal household-items, and how those firms can easily hide their true nature. The tracks are named after mythological chimeras and these arms manufacturers.

I guess that’s most what I want to say about the album:)

Huge thanks to Jakub of mappa of taking care of everything! <3 Really love the work Jakub is doing with the label.

Also thanks to @marutonkun for the rad cover, @adambdonoval for mastering and @tristan_bath for the album text!

Released by @___mappa

Pre-order, cassette, digital
Out August 10, 2023

Named after the mythological hybrid of the chimaera, Forces’ first collection for mappa was put together in a similar fashion. The sounds all stem from a fruitful residency at Stockholm’s EMS Elektronmusikstudion in May & June 2022, leading to a bounty of source material with which to build. The sounds and concept are equally chimeric, stringing together disparate and unintuitive jams, the music mimicking the multi-limbed, sewn together beasts of both creative open source coding and destructive multinational concerns who hide their cores amid endless appendages. Like Doctor Moreau, Forces - aka Finnish artist Joonas Siren - weaves wildly varying attributes into something new, from short-circuiting 8-bit dream ambience to fractured digital groans, drones, and noisy freakouts.

Recorded, coded, composed, performed & mixed by Forces (Joonas Siren)

Recorded at @elektronmusikstudion_ems, June 2022, with the digital synths of the "90's wagon" synth rack, and the SuperCollider programming language

  • I will open for @aleksandra.slyz next Monday at @meetfactory in Prague! ✨⚡❤️

Aleksandra will play a special set "Primal Rituals" at 21 and I'm at 20

Building the set right just now and it seems to be a mixture of old and new stuff, pretty hectic but I guess that's just me:)
  • The last five days of our exhibition "2 Million Seconds" by Juuso Noronkoski, Tuomo Rainio and me at Forum Box gallery! Open Tue-Sun 12-17.

"A joint exhibition by three artists at Forum Box explores the relativity and temporal asynchrony of different durations. The artists, who all work with different media, focus on the dialogue between material processes. Digital processes construct and deconstruct the image and stretch sound, while chemical processes shape photographic paper. Water, stored for millions of years, evaporates invisibly during the course of the exhibition, in about two million seconds."
  • I had quite much fun at the recent @noisetraffic event in January and I think my gig went pretty well so I decided to upload it to SoundCloud. Link in bio!

The set is pretty much weird SuperCollider sound synthesis. This time not any kind of granular synthesis, just all kinds of more abstract oscillator sound sources while using a live coding paradigm called Node Proxy in SC.

Thanks again the organizers @aetherlinna @emmidiately @constantinos.diary and others!
  • I posted this as a story, but why not a post as well. New mix out on @hibridanita ! Thanks 2 @_v.3lo for the invite and for the cover <3

I livecoded the whole thing w SuperCollider as I wanted to do on the fly manipulations, as u can see with this granulated Meat Loaf. xD Otherwise maybe slightly eclectic one as I played everything from Don Cherry to Xanopticon to Carl Stone to Finnish schlager Pave Maijanen. Also plenty of experimental music from friends! ( <3!). Link in bio

  • I will playing my beloved MIDI saxophone live next Saturday 🎷🎷!!!

Part of Envelope Festival 2022 (organized by @artillery35 ) I'll perform an AV Streaming performance on my Twitch Channel ::::

www.twitch.tv/ffforces --- 22:00 GMT+3 (21 Berlin, 20 London, 15 New York, 12 Seattle etcetc) - FB link in bio

I'll play completely new material based on generating a lot of MIDI events which will control two multitimbral synths (up to 32 channels/presets!), two non-multitimbral synths and about a dozen of different VSTs. Plan is to rapidly generate a lot of different MIDI notes and program change which will generate an ever-changing tapestry of digital tones. Atm I'm experimenting with gamelan scales so really looking forward for this::))
  • Phew, just made it from @shapeplatform introduction trip to Prague! Now back in HKI and I realized, I never made a post about my selection.

Feeling super lucky to be selected (thanks @meetfactory ) and I had awesome time meeting every one in Prague <3. Looking forward what the next year will bring:)

Thanks for the awesome gig @passepartoutduo (second to the last photo)!

Last photo: lecture & 303s by the mighty TM404 @tilliander (thanks for Scandinavian chit chat & company!)

  • 'Inertia' album release day is upon us! Released by Infinite Machine and now available everywhere. A long journey so I'm super happy that it is out. Thank you @xwolfcultx for believing in my work and all the effort getting this out <3. Thanks @fausto.mercier for the ace mastering as well!

@infinite.machine is happy to welcome the Finnish interdisciplinary artist, Forces, to the IM family with the release of 'Inertia', Joonas Siren’s fifth album since he began phtting out music in 2018. With previous cosigns from Aphex Twin, Zuli & Daniel Ruane, Forces is known for creating sharp digital textures and ever-surprising rhythmic structures using live coding software such as SuperCollider and TidalCycles.

With a background in fine art, Forces is never one to shy away from conceptual thinking about his output and this album is no different. Engaging with the work of theorist Franco Berardi (particularly recent book ‘Futurability’), Inertia tries to soundtrack the political malaise of the last few decades and the growing sense of powerlessness and inability to avoid the many crises generated by the structures of capital.

  • Forces - Chaosmosis (IM097) https://chaosmos.is

Second track ‘Chaosmosis' from the upcoming album ‘Inertia’ out on @infinite.machine on 1st of July.

’Chaosmosis’ is also a web animation, which u can view at the address: https://chaosmos.is (only laptop/desktop works) (link is bio && also on SoundCloud!).

The generative animation is programmed with Three.js library and with two different 3D models of Russian shipwrecks sunken in the Gulf of Finland in the 18th century. The Finnish Maritime Museum generously published those models online for free of use.

The whole album is inspired by the philosopher Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi’s 'Futurability' book and the way it deals with the systematic failure of Neo Liberal Capitalism and the current inability to resist it.

The 'Chaosmosis' webpage project is a poetic rendering of the failing structures of current hegemony. The sunken imperialistic war and cargo ships of the Russian empire has of course political connotations of this current moment, but they can also be seen as more abstract remnants of the past. Disappearing and rotten forms.

IM097 - Forces - Inertia
Label: Infinite Machine
Release Date: July 1st, 2022
Format: Digital
Mastered by Fausto Mercier
Cover: Forces

Infinite Machine is happy to welcome Finnish interdisciplinary artist, Forces, to the IM family with the release of Inertia, Joonas Siren’s fifth album since he began putting out music in 2018.

Forces opens up proceedings with ‘Algorithmic Governance’, where doom-laden bass drones pulse and groan over erratic drum hits which play in alien time signatures, outside of the realm of full, human comprehension. The algorithmic control of the track’s title could refer to Franco Berardi’s interest in social media, a force which simplifies and monetises social communication, or it could refer to his approach to co-creation with his software of choice. With many compositions, Forces sets up rules or parameters in his code but allows elements of randomisation and evolution, inviting SuperCollider’s algorithm to become a co-author alongside him.

  • I've relocated to Stockholm for six weeks for an EMS residency! Super grateful to be selected for a longer residency which is supported by NCP.

Making sounds here everyday, come and say hi, if you're around.

Also if anybody knows any possibilities for live set here in Stockholm (or Sweden/ Scandinavia) please DM.

Would be awesome to play!

  • I'm again bit behind on my social media game but here is a track called "Anti-Apophenia" from a recently released compilation AURAL COOPERATIV by the Chilean label @hibridanita . Big up for all the artists included!

Some words about the title: Apophenia is a condition where u see connections between unrelated things. But i was thinking a different kind of condition. Maybe the denial of climate change against massive amounts of evidence is akin to anti-apophenia - some kind of breakdown of cognitive faculties, where u aren't able to to see the reasons behind catastrophic weather conditions and other CC derivatives.

Track link in bio!

  • I have a peculiar 60s Agfa pocket camera, which uses half frame of a 35mm (so I guess like 16mm). There are really almost no settings at all in the camera but I really dig the quality of images if u let them cook for a while inside the camera xD. Just got these developed from 2015 Sodankylä Fest (Midnight Sun Film Fest).
